Germany's Experiment with a Guest Worker Plan - Not Successful

the Germans experimented with a guest worker program bringing in many immigrants from far places, mostly from Turkey, as guest workers, temporary workers to help with a labor shortage. They thought that it would be effective, and most of the workers would go home. what they found though, according to this article, is that employers were reluctant to release these workers, and the workers were reluctant to go home, instead bringing their families over. Today, Germany is having very similar problems with the United States in regards to a lack of assimilation by its immigrants, who stubbornly keep to the traditions and cultures they brought from their native lands. What lesson can America learn? A guest worker program is probably only a short-term solution that will produce more problems in the long run than the problems it will solve in the short term.

I tend to believe that a guest-worker program is the best we can do, but one that upon good behavior can lead to permanent residency and ultimately citizenship.

I disagree with you that we don't assimilate. I say "we" because I was brought to this country illegally and I'm now very well assimilated. Most people I know who've been here as long as I have share my experience.

And by the way, I commend you for your good comments over at Vox Day's blog. You're alot more patient than I am.

thanks arturo. :)

perhaps a guest-worker plan will work better in the United States with Mexico compared to Germany's attempt with Turkey. Mexican culture is more closely alligned to American than Turkish is with German.

You've seen the comments on Mr. Day's blog by some....less kind, shall we say....what do you think we Americans can do better to give more incentives to Mexicans to 'assimilate?' IF that's the main concern of My feeling is that those Mexicans who do not 'assimilate' do not do so because they are not being welcomed in to American culture.
